House M-M

Helsinki, 2010–2013, 170 sqm

Built in a garden of an existing villa from the 19th Century this house for a family of four and a separate flat for the great-grandmother is set on a northfacing slope. The living spaces were thus situated on the second floor to benefit from the sunlight. The southern corner rises to allow views across the road and train tracks to the north. The building has a timber frame and is clad in Siberian larch.

Extract from the Finnish Architecture Biennial Review 2014 jury report:

“The client wished to build an up-to-date family house sharing a plot with an older home occupied by the older generation. With its untreated wooden facade turning grey naturally, the house can be read as an interpretation of the outbuilding of a traditional Nordic farm.” – Jenny B. Osuldsen, Snohetta
